Marine Snow-Oil Interaction Affects n-Alkane Biodegradation in Sediment

چکیده
Abstract During the Deepwater Horizon (DwH) oil spill, an excessive production of marine snow was observed, and it estimated that as much 14% transferred to ocean floor by MOSSFA (Marine Oil Snow Sedimentation Flocculent Accumulation). is important pathway transferring floor. We performed experiments at laboratory scale in 15 aquaria, representing 5 exposures with or without oil, only controls clay sediment. developed a method produce artificial snow, which resembles natural snow. Results showed 40% less biodegradation alkanes “marine oil” compared “only oil.” Most probably, this due preferred organics comparing alkanes. Biodegradation reduces dissolved oxygen concentration, might result anaerobic conditions sediment layer. This finding can be projected potential effect.

Alkane biodegradation and dynamics of phylogenetic subgroups of sulfate-reducing bacteria in an anoxic coastal marine sediment artificially contaminated with oil.
For 503 days, unoiled control and artificially oiled sediments were incubated in situ at 20m water depth in a Mediterranean coastal area. Degradation of the aliphatic fraction of the oil added was followed by GC-MS. At the same time, terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) of 16S rRNA encoding genes was used to detect dynamics in the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) community ...
متن کاملStructural insights into diversity and n-alkane biodegradation mechanisms of alkane hydroxylases
Environmental microbes utilize four degradation pathways for the oxidation of n-alkanes. Although the enzymes degrading n-alkanes in different microbes may vary, enzymes functioning in the first step in the aerobic degradation of alkanes all belong to the alkane hydroxylases. Alkane hydroxylases are a class of enzymes that insert oxygen atoms derived from molecular oxygen into different sites o...
متن کاملMarine crude-oil biodegradation: a central role for interspecies interactions
The marine environment is highly susceptible to pollution by petroleum, and so it is important to understand how microorganisms degrade hydrocarbons, and thereby mitigate ecosystem damage. Our understanding about the ecology, physiology, biochemistry and genetics of oil-degrading bacteria and fungi has increased greatly in recent decades; however, individual populations of microbes do not funct...
متن کاملVolatile hydrocarbons inhibit methanogenic crude oil degradation
Methanogenic degradation of crude oil in subsurface sediments occurs slowly, but without the need for exogenous electron acceptors, is sustained for long periods and has enormous economic and environmental consequences. Here we show that volatile hydrocarbons are inhibitory to methanogenic oil biodegradation by comparing degradation of an artificially weathered crude oil with volatile hydrocarb...
